Why Have a Birthday Party?

What is a birthday party except calling attention to the fact that you are another year older? People bring presents, hopefully ones you need or asked for. If not, they are re-gifting something they got at their birthday they didn’t like or didn’t want.

Birthdays have always been celebrated with parties to embarrass and poke fun of the lucky birthday person, whether they be a king, a queen or a regular person. As far back as ancient Rome, the tradition of celebrating the day of birth has been recorded. Long ago Christian religions taught that these parties were against their teachings, until the early 600′s when they finally had change of heart and starting celebrating birth days as well.

The parties that we are familiar with today are usually sophisticated events for notable years, and sometimes a smaller, quiet gathering for less celebrated anniversaries. There are some years that celebration is more important. Young kids love themed, highly planned parties. Turning twenty-one would be an afterthought if not for the ritual of legal drinking, though most, if not all, have had a drink long before then. On the opposite end, by thirty or forty, the luster has worn off and the parties stop, until one reaches ninety or one-hundred, when each birthday party is a miraculous event.

No matter the year you’re celebrating, a party is a party! When you have a reason to eat desserts and receive gifts, who cares how old you are? Every year of your life should be celebrated by noting the day that you were born.
